  1. This weeks “Where in the World” is a monument called “Atomium”. This monument was originally built for Expo 58, the 1950 world fair. This fair was very popular. The Atomium was designed by Andre Waterkeyn and Architects Polak, it stands 102m tall. This structure has 9 steel spheres connected ,so that the wholes form the shapes of a unit cell an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. They enclose escalators connecting the spheres containing exhibit halls, and other public spaces. Each sphere is 18 m in diameters. The renovations to this monument started on March 2004 it closed to public in October and remained closed until February 18 2006. The renovations included the faded aluminum sheets with stainless steel. The Atomium is the most visited attraction in Brussels today. I think the Atomium is a very interesting monument that one day I would like to see.

  2. This week the "Where in the World" is the Atomuim. This monument is located 50* N and 4* E in Brussels, Belgium. In fact this interesting structure has 9 steel spheres connected so that it forms the shape of a unit sell of an Iron Crystal magnified 165 billion times and stands 102m tall! All monuments need to be designed, in this case the Atomuim was designed by André Waterkeyn and Les Architectes Polak. These two men originally built it for the Expo ‘58/World’s Fair. I think that this structure was very creatively built and is very interesting to look at. Although this monument is very big it is amazing in many different ways.

  3. This weeks "Where in the World" is the Atomium. I find the Atomium fascinating in every way. Some facts about the Atomium are that it's 165 Billion times bigger than a real atom. Each of the spheres have a volume of 3,054 cubic meters. And finally, the Atomium is a symbol of a peaceful use of atomic energy for scientific purposes. This structure is epic in every way and I would like to visit it one day.

  4. This weeks "Where in the World" is the Atomium. The Atomium is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Europe! The latitude and longitude of this monument is 50 degrees north and 4 degrees east. The Atomium was built for the Expo 58 and was created by Andre Waterkeyn. It was completed in 1958 and is very tall! The Atomium was aproximately 334 ft tall. Thats pretty big. The Atomium has nine steal spheres but only 5 out of nine of the steal spheres are opened to the public. It would be really fasinateing to go to see the Atomium at night because at night the spheres are lit up with 2,970 lights. The Atomium is without a doubt one of the coolest attractions in Europe! 5. This week Mr.S assigned our where in the world. It is on the Atomium. The Atomium is a place on the outskirts of Brussels. The main attraction is the futuristic structure called the "Atomium" obviously. It also has a sphere shaped room that gives a beautiful veiw over Brussels. The Atomium was planned on 1955 and work started in the following year 1956. The stucture was finally finished in 1958 and then they held the 1958 Brussels world Fair also known as Expo 58. This place is one of Europes most well known attractions and is probably the most valuable and unique one of them all.

  6. This week's Where in the World is called the Atomium. This monument was built in 1958 for the Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Brussels in the location of the Atomium. This structure was built by André Waterkeyn and Les Architectes Polak. It currently stands 102 metres tall, or 335 feet tall. It has 9 spheres made of steel that are connected so that it makes the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times! Each sphere is 18 metres in diameter (around the whole shape). Renovation on the Atomium began in March 2004 and it was closed to the public in October, and remained closed until 18 February 2006. The changes included replacing the faded aluminium outside on the spheres with stainless steel. In 2008, the Atomium celebrated its 50th anniversary. I this this is a very unique structure and I would love to see it live one day!

  7. This weeks Where in the World is about the Atomium. This moument is in Brussels it is 335ft tall and was designed by André Waterkeyn and Les Architectes Polak. It has nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.Tubes connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre. They enclose escalators connecting the spheres containing exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. Each sphere is 18 metres in diameters. Three spheres are currently (2008) closed to visitors, others can be reached easily by escalators. The vertical vertex contains a lift which was very fast and advanced at the time of building (the speed is 5 m).Renovation on the Atomium began in March 2004; it was closed to the public in October, and remained closed until 18 February 2006. The renovations included replacing the faded aluminium sheets on the spheres with stainless steel. To help pay for renovations, the old aluminium was sold to the public as souvenirs. A triangular piece about 2 m long sold for €1,000.

  8. This week’s Where in the World monument is the Atomium. The Atomium was the main pavilion and icon of the World Fair of Brussels (1958), commonly called Expo 58. It is located in Brussels, Belgium, 102 meters in height, and it includes nine interconnected spheres. It was invented by the engineer André Waterkeyn (1917-2005). However, the spheres were fitted out by the architects André and Jean Polak. The Atomium was designed in 1955 and completed in 1958. The amazing structure was built to represent the atomic lattice of iron crystals, magnified 165 billion times linearly, according to the “cubic body centered” system. I personally think it is a very unique, exotic landmark. It is very different and interesting in so many ways. The Atomium was the star of Expo 58 and it is still a worldwide attraction for tourists today.

  16. This week’s “Where in the World” is a fun and exciting monument called the Atomium. The structure was built in 1958 in Brussels, Belgium by Andre Waterkeyn and Les Architectes- Polak and was originally built for Expo 58’, the 1958 Brussels World Fair. The oddly shaped figure stands approximately 102 meters tall from the very bottom to the top sphere. The monument includes nine steel spheres connected together. Three spheres are currently (2008) closed for visitors, others can be easily reached by escalators. After 10 years since the Atomium was built it appeared in the background of the 1968 music video for Pink Floyd’s Paint Box and was recently the tenth pit stop in “The Amazing Race 19.” Renovations of the monument began in March 2004; it was closed to the public in October, and remained closed until February 2006. The renovations included replacing the faded aluminum sheets on the spheres with stainless steel. Since the renovations were very expensive, they sold the old aluminum as souvenirs to help pay. I believe the Atomium looks a lot like a fairess wheel and it also looks very fun and exciting. I hope that maybe one day I will be able to go to Belgium and visit this intersting looking monument.

  17. This weeks “Where in the World” is the Atomium. The Atomium is located in the northern outskirts of Brussels at the Heysel plateau. It symbolizes a crystallized molecule of iron of atoms. The Atomium has been look as if it had been magnified 150 thousand million times. The construction was designed by André Waterkeyn in 1958. This structure became one of the major landmarks of the city when it was seen at the International Exhibition of Brussels. The Atomium was made of steel clad with aluminium. It is built with nine large spheres representing atoms joined by 15 tubes. The height of this structure is 102 metres or 335 feet. The Atomium is also a building where people can visit. Visitors use the spheres to walk in and elevators and escalators to travel to one another. They are installed inside the tubes. Three of spheres (2008) are unfortunately closed for viewers. It takes just 23 seconds to get to the top sphere from the bottom, which is a restaurant. The viewpoint below can contain 250 people at once. In March 2004 renovation started. It included replacing faded aluminium sheets on the balls with stainless steel. The pieces of the old aluminium were sold as souvenirs to help pay the renovation. The Atomium was reopened on 18th February 2006. I think the Atomium is a very creatively shaped monument, and someday hope to visit.
